Print Parents and students frustrated that Huntington Beach City School District’s two middle schools are not going back to full-time in-person instruction, held a protest outside of the district office on Wednesday morning. The district’s six elementary schools returned to full-time instruction in the last week, joining other area school districts, including Newport Mesa and Ocean View. But more than 2,000 combined students at Ethel Dwyer and Isaac L. Sowers middle schools remain in an A.M./P.M. hybrid model. The students are on campus for 140 scheduled minutes every weekday except Wednesday, when they’re on campus for 96 minutes. ....
Laguna Beach USD launches plan to shore-up student achievement after COVID-19 By Breeana Greenberg, Special to the Independent The Laguna Beach Unified School District has developed a plan to accelerate learning after some parents aired concerns about a slump in student achievement amidst online and hybrid learning. Chad Mabery, assistant superintendent of instructional services, recently briefed the school board on an 18-month plan “based on a lot of the things we’ve seen this last year in the pandemic.” The plan takes on four forms: assessment of student learning, in-class support and intervention, outside-of-class support and intervention, and staff training and collaborative planning. ....

Police had been investigating Charles Jacques, 58, since March on allegations that he had engaged with lewd acts with a minor on multiple occasions, Huntington Beach police Lt. Brian Smith said. Throughout the investigation, detectives identified additional minor victims. Officers served a search warrant on Jacques’ residence on Thursday morning, Smith said. They took him into custody for four counts, including forced oral copulation with a minor through force or fear, lewd acts with a minor under the age of 14, lewd acts with a minor and child annoyance. ....
