Viewers will be unable to stream ABC shows without a login from July

Logging in to watch television has cracked the final holdout. In July the ABC will make personal accounts mandatory for anyone who wants to use iview, the national broadcaster’s streaming platform. For now, there is no set date for this hard border, as the ABC is trying to coax its viewing audience into signing up instead of cracking down on them, but at some point next month it will happen.
“We’re working towards mandatory in July, but it doesn’t mean July 1,” says Leisa Bacon, the ABC’s director of audiences. “We deliberately left it open because we want to take our audiences with us and take on board their feedback and iterate the experience. We’re working towards a later in July date, but at some point it will definitely happen.” ....

ABC iview to make logins mandatory

From July ABC iview will introduce mandatory logins for free accounts, which was hinted last October.
It follows the broadcaster offering an optional login last May.
Individual profiles for each household member will include personal programme recommendations and watchlists of shows to catch later on.
The login also enabling viewers to continue watching programmes across multiple devices – picking up a show on one screen where they left off on another.
A new campaign to promote iview features puppet characters, Linh, Arj, and Gloria, designed in-house and then made by Kay Yasugi from Digital Seagull. Sam Simmons is narrator of the campaign. ....

ABC iview is offering even more to Australians in 2021. The ABC’s video-on-demand (VOD) service helps viewers watch what they want, when they want it, with new personalised features that make it easier to enjoy outstanding programmes from the nation’s biggest collection of Australian content.
Rolling out from July, audiences will need an ABC account to watch ABC iview’s unrivalled catalogue of Australian drama, documentaries, news, comedies and children’s content. Account holders will also get the benefits of individual profiles for each household member and features such as personal programme recommendations – cutting down time spent endlessly scrolling for great content – and watchlists of shows they want to catch later on. ....
