Eleven Far-Left Extremists Convicted of Attacking Matteo Salvini Alberto PIZZOLI/AFP 10 Jul 2021 Eleven of 16 far-left extremists accused of attacking a vehicle carrying populist senator Matteo Salvini have been sentenced to up to 18 months in prison along with large fines. The convictions relate to an incident that took place in Bologna in 2014 and saw a group of leftists attack a vehicle containing Salvini and several other League (Lega) politicians. Initially, the Bologna public prosecutor had asked for all 16 extremists to be sentenced to 16 months for criminal damage, 21 months for violent acts, and two years for bodily injury, but only 11 of the extremists were convicted in court, ....

National Conservative Brothers of Italy Party Surge in Polls 24 Apr 2021 The national conservative Brothers of Italy party (FdI), which is in opposition to the government of Italian prime minister Mario Draghi, have surged in support in a poll. The party, which is the only member of Italy’s centre-right coalition of parties which has not participated in the current “technical government”, is less than a percentage point behind the left-wing Democrats (PD), which remains the second-largest party in the country. According to a report from the newspaper Il Giornale, an Agi/Youtrend survey puts the party headed by firebrand Giorgia Meloni at 17.9 per cent, behind the PD, which scored 18.8 per cent. Israel has briefly detained three Jerusalem-based candidates for Palestinian legislative elections, deepening a dispute over whether banning Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem from voting in next month’s polls could derail them. The three candidates represent factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization who planned a press conference in a Jerusalem hotel to call for the need to press Israel into allowing political activities in the eastern part of the city, reported the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa. In briefly detaining the candidates, Israel appears to be signaling it will not tolerate Palestinian political activity in East Jerusalem. It has not said whether it will or will not allow Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem to vote in the election. ....
