Suspect charged with shooting Kings Mountain cop A man accused of shooting a Kings Mountain Police officer was released from the hospital over the weekend, but his freedom was short-lived. Antonio Cortez Anthony was immediately booked into jail and charged with first-degree attempted murder, assault on a police officer with a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held in Gaston County Jail without bond. The 30-year-old Hickory man is accused of shooting Cpl. Lee Whittington, a 13-year veteran of the Kings Mountain Police Department. He reportedly came in contact with Anthony in the neighborhood near the country club, and gunfire was exchanged. ....
Suspect named in shooting of Kings Mountain officer The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has named a suspect in the shooting of a Kings Mountain Police officer. Thirty-year-old Antonio Cortez Anthony has been identified as the person involved in the shootout that sent both himself and Cpl. Lee Whittington to the hospital Saturday night. Anthony remains in the hospital, and the Kings Mountain Police officer was released from the hospital Wednesday. The SBI quickly took over the investigation as is customary in officer-involved shootings.
