New geological study shows fault lines meeting under SLC Two active fault lines appear to connect under downtown Salt Lake City, according to a newly-published geological study. and last updated 2021-06-14 19:49:31-04 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah â Two active fault lines appear to connect under downtown Salt Lake City, according to a newly published geological study. Scientists believe they have the potential to cause more damage than previously thought. Utah is believed to have a 50 percent risk of a large, damaging earthquake along the Wasatch Fault in 50 years. âItâs been an outstanding question in the world of earthquakes: What happens when one fault ends and another one begins?â Boise State Universityâs Lee Liberty said during an interview with FOX 13 News. ....
Boise State News June 9, 2021 An excerpt from the study’s abstract reads: “Although the Wasatch fault is currently known to have a high‐seismic hazard from motion along range‐bounding faults, new seismic data reveal faulted and folded 13,000–30,000‐yr‐old Lake Bonneville strata beneath Salt Lake City (SLC). Coupled with previous excavation trench, borehole, and other geologic and geophysical observations, we conclude that a zone of latest Pleistocene and/or Holocene faulting and folding kinematically links the East Bench and Warm Springs faults through a 3 km wide relay structure and transfer zone.” ....

The findings, published in the open-access journal The Seismic Record, suggest that earthquakes magnitude 5.0 and larger could cause ground displacement and liquefaction in Salt Lake City that increase the risk of earthquake-related building damage. As part of the Wasatch Fault Zone, the region has a complex seismic history, with at least 24 large earthquakes occurring in the urbanized parts of the zone over the past 7000 years. Along with previous excavation, borehole and other geophysical studies, the new research also supports the possibility of through-going ruptures across multiple f ....

Could another big Idaho earthquake happen after March s magnitude 6.5 jolt? KTVB spoke with a researcher about what they ve learned about Idaho s magnitude 6.5 earthquake and the aftershocks. Author: Shirah Matsuzawa Updated: 7:55 AM MST January 18, 2021 BOISE, Idaho From Boise to Cascade and Challis, people from across Idaho felt the magnitude 6.5 earthquake back in March. On Friday, Lee Liberty, a research professor in the Department of Geosciences at Boise State University, explained to KTVB what scientists have discovered since that earthquake happened north of Stanley. “Just to be clear, the earthquake sequence isn’t over,” Liberty said. He along with a team of researchers has been studying the earthquake, its aftershocks, and the potential of another large earthquake happening. ....
