Nature-based solutions to decrease flooding – The Echo

Local groups say support and interest is growing for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to be considered as a flood mitigation option for Lismore and to be included in the Flood Risk Management Plan.
Lindy Margan, a member of a committee that has been investigating flood options to decrease flooding in Lismore, says the group are interested in a new approach focused on NbS and have just released a document supporting this idea.
‘Nature-based is a long term project with great benefits for the community and the environment into the future,’ says Ms Margan. ‘It is certainly not a quick fix and can’t be rolled out shovel ready like some hard infrastructure projects that we’ve seen in the past.’ ....

This teen AFL player is taking on umpiring challenge

With her sights firmly set on a professional sporting career, a talented teenage AFL athlete is looking to expand her skills with umpiring the game she loves.
Growing up playing Australian rules, Lismore Swans player Eliza O Toole, 17, has now heeded the call from AFL North Coast who are looking for more umpires.
Ms O Toole said umpiring will add another dimension to her footy skills set.
I started six or seven years ago playing with the boys and am now a member of the Swans Women s team, she said.
I ve umpired AFL games for school and my main goal is to play professional women s football with the Brisbane Lions. ....

An innovative program at a Northern Rivers High School to rename its campus blocks to reflect local Aboriginal language is the first to do so in the Bundjalung nation.
For example, one of the new signs to be displayed says ngulliboo , which means all of us .
At Lismore High School two of the Aboriginal student leaders and prefects, John Gorman, 17, and Jaidyn Cicchinelli, 17, spoke about the importance of the Renaming the Blocks in Broader Bundjalung Project .
The pair were part of the project, which the school said was led every step of the way by the school s Aboriginal students, while the whole school was involved in determining the final names for each block. ....
