Reviewed by BILL STEPHENS SINCE settling in Canberra in 2000, Liz Lea has established herself as an outstanding contributor to dance in Canberra. Much admired as a dancer, choreographer and mover and shaker, her innovative dance works have won awards and attracted international attention for their originality and innovation. âThe Pointâ, which premiered at the Belconnen Arts Centre last night (April 29) is another in a long line of memorable creations by Lea. Unfazed when her original concept for âThe Pointâ as a collaboration with Singaporeâs Maya Dance Theatre was stymied by COVID-19 travel restrictions, Lea simply turned her gaze inwards to the local Indian dance community to bring her concept to fruition. ....
A GROUP of Southampton students were treated to an inspirational speech from a GB Paralympian. Year 10 and 11 students from Oasis Academy Lordshill were thrilled to have a virtual call with Rugby Paralympian Aaron Phipps at the end of last week. The speech was a prize from the city’s Mayflower 400 Giving Thanks competition. The students had impressed the judges with their messages of gratefulness earlier in the year. The theme continued in this talk with Aaron sharing about how much more grateful he had become for small thing since his life was changed in Year 11. Aaron lost his legs below the knee and some of his fingers when he contracted meningitis as he was finishing secondary school. ....

Written by and starring a local gender-diverse cast who traverse the wacky experiences of being trans and gender diverse, it was created by Tuggeranong Arts Centre in collaboration with performance artist and community builder Kat Reed (recently named 2021 Young Canberra Citizen of the Year) and artist and vocal coach Dianna Nixon from Wild Voices Music Theatre. Vivienne Binns. BOTH present-day and former Canberra artists feature prominently in this year’s $25,000 Australia Council Awards, announced today, April 19, by federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher. Veteran Canberra visual artist, Vivienne Binns, was the recipient of the $25,000 Australia Council Award for Visual Arts for a career that spans more than 60 years. She has worked primarily as a painter, although it is an installation work by Binns which is showing in the NGA’s current show, “Know My Name: Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now”. Binns was praised by the council for having continually experimented and, alongside her painting practice, having embraced the mediums of printmaking, performance, sculpture and drawing, as well as for having made an outstanding contribution to Australian art, particularly in regard to feminist and community art. ....
