The Union newspaper won a handful of awards in the 2020 California Journalism Awards Contest. The paper took fifth place in General Excellence, a category that includes all papers with a daily circulation of 15,000 or under. Photo: Elias Funez Wednesday’s snow flurries caused wrecks on roads around the county, but with no serious injuries reported as of late that afternoon. Chain controls were established early Wednesday on local highways. On Interstate 80, eastbound chains were being required on all vehicles, except four-wheel drive from Kingvale to Donner Lake, and trucks were being screened at Applegate. On Highway 20, chains were being required on all vehicles, except four-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels, from Nevada City to the Interstate, and trucks were being screened at Nevada Street. The same requirement was imposed on Highway 174 from Colfax to Memorial Park in Grass Valley, according to the Caltrans website. ....
GRASS VALLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT Thursday 11:37 a.m. A caller from the 2000 block of Nevada City Highway reported panhandling gypsies. They were moving on. At 12:33 p.m., they were reported in the intersection of Freeman Lane and West McKnight Way. At 1:30 p.m., the gypsy panhandlers were reported in the 100 block of West McKnight Way and a citation was issued. 12:30 p.m. A caller from the 500 block of Mill Street reported finding drugs in a rental unit. 12:45 p.m. A caller from the 300 block of Pleasant Street reported his door had been broken down. 7:04 p.m. A caller from West Main and South Church streets reported a drunken woman walking in the road and stumbling. Another caller reported the woman in the middle of the road, trying to hitchhike. She could not be located. ....
By Liz Kellar | Staff Writer A man suspected of operating a butane honey oil lab is facing multiple felony charges after an explosion lifted the roof off his Grass Valley apartment Monday night. Kyle Patche, 31, sustained “significant” but not life-threatening burns and remained Tuesday at a regional burn center, said Grass Valley Police Capt. Steve Johnson. Upon release, Patche will be charged with illegal manufacturing of a controlled substance, two counts of felony child endangerment causing injury, causing a fire that caused injury or death and causing a fire of an inhabited structure, Johnson said. A 12-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy also were in the residence at the time of the explosion, Johnson said. The boy had relatively minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene, and the girl was transported to a Sacramento-area trauma center, treated and released later that night. Both children are in the care of Child Protective Services, he said. ....
