William E. Zagotta, Livermore I believe that the mammoth âGrothâ buildings facing L St plus the two mammoth new affordable-housing buildings proposed for the 8.5 acres in the new Downtown Plan will be incompatible with the character of our recently upgraded Livermore Downtown. The purpose of this letter is to urge changes to the new Downtown Plan by moving the affordable housing to the north side of Railroad Ave. The changed new Downtown Plan would be (more or less) as envisioned by past City Councils. It also could permit an increase in the amount of affordable housing in the plan. It would permit a larger Public Park. The previous Councils did not plan for the Public Park, but they would have if they thought of it. ....
Susan Springer, Livermore Did the Tri-Valley Conservancy (TVC) Board of Directors really think anyone would believe they were not endorsing the massive, industrial-solar projects in North Livermore when they contracted with Intersect Power to monitor the destruction of multiple threatened species during the construction and 50-year operation of the Aramis solar power plant? Certainly, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors believed TVCâs support was an endorsement. Two supervisors praised the project, believing it had the stamp of approval from the TVC. Moreover, in a letter to the supervisors prior to their vote on the project, TVC said its involvement in the Aramis project âwould provide integrity and accountability for the project.â ....
Richard K. Ernst, Livermore An ominous sign of the health and future of our nationâs democracy is occurring in state legislatures throughout the United States. On the one hand, a flurry of bills is being proposed, the effect of which, if enacted, would undermine the right of untold numbers of American citizens to vote. At the same time, other proposals would greatly relax common sense restrictions on where gun owners can legally carry loaded weapons and continue permitting the sale of military-style assault weapons. I would suggest that restricting citizenâs right to vote, while at the same time expanding the number of lethal weapons in the hands of private citizens, seriously jeopardizes the future of our democracy. Our democracy is much better served by guaranteeing the right of all legally eligible Americans to vote and reducing the proliferation of lethal weapons in our communities. ....
Weâve always supported the idea of a large park downtown. In fact, over many months, we gathered signatures for three petitions for that very purpose. Whenever we talked to citizens at the Farmersâ Market, outside grocery stores, or in neighborhoods, we always described what was planned just across the street on the old Groth Brothers lot: 222 units in 4-story buildings with parking garages. But, we had an election last March that sealed the deal for the downtown development and appeared to end any hope for the large Central Park that would have extended Stockmenâs Park to L Street. ....
