The DePaulia Lily Lowndes, Contributing Writer|May 9, 2021 “Face Me” is an experimental film created and directed by DePaul alum Ty Yamamoto. The film uses a montage of projected visuals to explore Hollywood’s dark history of casting non-Asian actors to play Asian roles. I sat down with the 2020 graduate to talk about “Face Me,” the CineYouth Film Festival (all films are available to stream here until May 13) and advice for current DePaul filmmakers. Q: How did you come up with the title of the film? A: I really wanted this video to feel like a call to action in some ways, and “Face Me” sounds very much like a command. Once I typed it out, it just felt right, and I stuck with it. ....
The DePaulia Lily Lowndes, Contributing Writer|May 3, 2021 Bridget Johnson wants to put good energy into the world with her films. Her music video for the song “Only Love” by Gem Tree is featured in the category “Lights, Camera, Lockdown” in the 16th international CineYouth Festival. Johnson, a senior at DePaul, wanted to subvert some of the stereotypical LGBTQ+ storylines in film by creating a feel-good music video following a budding romance between two female skaters. Local musician Gem Tree’s sweet voice serenades over the couple as they skateboard around Chicago and fall in love. Originally created for Johnson’s music video production class at DePaul, the film grew into a bigger project as it was sponsored by the fashion brand L Oliver Designs and New York City makeup company We Are Fluide. ....

K-pop is redefining music marketing in the U.S. Lily Lowndes, Contributing Writer|April 4, 2021 Why do people like K-pop? “All of the work that the artists put in from their trainee days until they debut is something admirable,” answered Jorge Solis, a member of TCN Pulse, a K-pop organization at DePaul. “To see the work they put in for each dance, each song, is something that attracts [fans].” Korean popular music, also known as K-pop, is a music genre that has garnered a growing global fanbase for its emphasis on creating an entertainment experience that goes beyond just music. “People are attracted to the music, [and] dance performances,” said fellow TCN Pulse member Kylie Mikunas. “Sometimes the meanings of the songs are very important as well and K-pop creates a sense of community.” ....
