In a time of flux, local author HelenKay Dimon is expanding her genre and writing under a pseudonym, Darby Kane. Her new novel, “Pretty Little Wife,” is a domestic suspense, with its own rules and rhythms.
“I write romantic suspense, so it was a jump, but maybe not as big of a jump, when it came to plotting,” said the bestselling author of more than 40 romantic suspense, contemporary and erotic romance books. “I was able to carry over everything I learned about the craft: characterization, point of view, unreliable narrators from romance writing to domestic suspense.
“The plot is intricate in ‘Pretty Little Wife.’ It took longer to sketch out and write. I decided early on it would be a standalone, not part of a series. In romance, I tended to write books about groups of people, like brothers, or undercover agents, and each couple would get its own book. Everything I wanted to say about this town, these people, and what happened had to go in one book.”
