Parents address school boards wanting no masks, vaccine bias in school

“We know COVID is real, but look where we’re at, everyone who wants to get vaccinated has the opportunity,” Parent Katherine Machesky said. “If they don’t want to get vaccinated, maybe something bad happens, but it’s their choice… We’re always gonna have COVID, it’s here just like the flu. We have to live our lives and let kids live their lives.”
Several more parents voiced concerns and dissatisfaction over the past year, and worried about the coming year, citing fears of vaccination bullying or segregation in the classroom according to who is immunized and who is not. ....

Birmingham, Huron Valley schools plan COVID-19 vaccination clinics

Birmingham Schools announced Friday two vaccination clinics for students at each of their high schools.
Huron Valley will also host a drive-thru vaccination clinic from 3-7 p.m. May 26 at Oak Valley Middle School, said Calandra Green, Oakland County Health Division nurse and administrator.
Other Oakland County districts, including South Lyon, are coordinating vaccine efforts with county health department partners for shots.
With the new guidelines making the vaccine eligible for anyone 12 and up, we ve had a lot of requests to support the schools, Green said. Our efforts have been to push the vaccine to all community partners, so pediatric offices and local pharmacies can provide in partnership with Oakland County. ....

School quarantine time halved in Huron Valley, South Lyon

A South Lyon father lobbied the school board May 4 for a new strategy to avoid the quarantines that sends kids home, including the one that just grounded his daughter.
His suggestion appeared to be a version of musical chairs moving kids every 15 minutes, so they aren t within the 6 feet of distance of another student that would mandate a quarantine if one should test positive for COVID-19.
While South Lyon board members couldn t commit to that, they and the Huron Valley school board to its north both approved reducing quarantine time by half to 7 days with a negative PCR test. ....

Huron Valley, South Lyon suffer huge student decreases in pandemic

In Novi, less than 100 students are gone from the previous year.
But both Huron Valley and South Lyon have been decimated, with the two districts combined losing more than 1,100 students. If those students do not return this fall, their absence will equate to millions of dollars of lost funding.
“We lost 600 students and we attribute that to COVID-19,” Huron Valley Superintendent Paul Salah said. “Just off the top, 210 are families that said, ‘We are not interested in dealing with COVID-19 and the potential transmission with face-to-face’ and they chose to homeschool. We also saw a number who chose to move out of state since they now have the option of working from home, and about 70 went to private schools.” ....
