Just before everything went to hell, we had the last Oscars, that feel-good win for
Parasite, and me writing this piece while we were wearing jackets and heating our homes. This year, we go from the Oscars pretty much straight into the summer movie season, and Iâm writing this story while running my A/C. The ceremony this Sunday will have a different vibe, with producer Steven Soderbergh saying it will feel like a movie. (Um, OK.) Theyâll still be giving out the following awards that Iâm handicapping. As always, if my predictions are wrong, Iâll refund you the newsstand price of our paper.
US critics vote “Vitalina Varela” as fourth best foreign language film
The film Vitalina Varela , by Pedro Costa, was voted the fourth best foreign language of the year by the National Society of Film Critics of the United States, that organisation announced today.
The announcement, which placed “Vitalina Varela” behind the Romanian “Collective”, by Alexander Nanau, the Brazilian “Bacurau”, Kléber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, and the Russian “Beanpole”, by Kantemir Balagov, was made through the account organization s Twitter account after the 55th annual awards meeting.
According to the vote, “Collective” got 38 points, while “Bacurau” and “Beanpole” got 36 ‘ex aequo’ points, followed by “Vitalina Varela” with 32 points. Scene s annual Jim Ridley Memorial Film Poll coming in print and online Jan. 14 here’s my own personal Best Of for the cinema of 2020, as well as where they can be streamed, rented or bought. So many things can be said about 2020, most of them unpalatable to delicate sensibilities. But despite major studio release plans getting scuttled, dumped or punted ahead to 2021, it has been a superb year for film. Dig in and enjoy it’s still safe to do so.
