MUSKEGON, MI – In a sure sign that spring is on its way, Beach Street at Muskegon’s Pere Marquette Park is fully reopened to traffic.
The street, which closes each winter between Beachwood Park and the water filtration plant near Lakeshore Drive, was reopened the morning of Friday, March 5, said Muskegon Public Works Director Leo Evans. ....

UPDATE: This story has been updated that Muskegon Lake was filled in an estimated 16%.
MUSKEGON, MI – Seven historical maps, rolled, folded and tucked away, were recently discovered in the basement of Muskegon City Hall.
The maps were found as the city started relocating the engineering offices from city hall to a new location at the Department of Public Works. Leo Evans, the director of public works, said it appeared engineering recognized their significance and kept the maps over the years.
The oldest one from 1873 dates back to Muskegon’s earliest days as a city. A carefully penned note on a plat map says it was approved by the city council on April 9, 1903. And one map of the sewer system was stamped and signed by the state sanitary engineer: “Examined and approved, May 28, 1914.” ....

MUSKEGON, MI – A neighborhood park in Muskegon’s Jackson Hill area is in line to get some much-needed love.
Aamodt Park is one of the first of several city parks to get overdue upgrades, according to city officials.
The city is planning a large new playground structure and picnic shelter at the 2-acre park off Marquette Avenue between Wood and Erickson streets. ....

New Warnings For Muskegon
2020 posted 57 drownings in Lake Michigan according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. In Muskegon, a new warning system has been purchased in an effort to lower those numbers.
Muskegon s City Commission has purchased the SwimSmart Warning Systems for $14,000. The system uses a series of flashing lights to alert beachgoers of the lake conditions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is responsible for gathering the information and it will be automatically sent to Muskegon County.
The warning system uses a series of small red, yellow and green lights. A larger red, elevated light will blink when it s not safe for swimmers to go into the water. ....
