County Approves Performance Parking Pilot After Hashing Out Equity Concerns

The County Board approved a test of surge-price parking in Arlington on Tuesday, after discussing the potential impacts on people with lower incomes.
The $5.4 million project is funded by VDOT, and the funds are expected to cover everything from developing to installing the needed parking software and hardware. Drivers will find this new type of parking on the streets in the Rosslyn-Ballston and Crystal City-Pentagon City corridors.
The program, also known as “performance parking,” was pulled from the Saturday meeting over concerns about how this would impact people with lower incomes, parking planner Stephen Crim said during the Tuesday recessed meeting. ....

Efforts by preservationists not scoring points with Arlington County Board

Efforts to place the 9-acre Rouse estate at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and North McKinley Road into a local historic district appear to have pushed the property owner to move forward with the ânuclear optionâ â tearing it down before such government action can take place.
And, county officials say, there is not much they can do to prevent it.
âOur hands are pretty much tied,â County Board Chairman Libby Garvey said Dec. 12, effectively rebuffing a request that the county government take stronger actions to reduce the likelihood that the estateâs circa-1907 main property might be razed.
At the boardâs Dec. 12 meeting, Tom Dickinson â who last April made the request that the parcel be designated a local historic district â voiced concerns about the countyâs issuing paperwork necessary for the structures on the site to be demolished, and asked that county leaders âimmediately interveneâ on the matter. ....

Arlington board rewords anti-police phrasing on legislative request

Arlington County Board members on Dec. 12 opted to back off proposed verbiage in their 2021 legislative-priorities package that apparently left a bad taste in the mouths of local law enforcement.
Board members voted to change wording of a proposal that asks the General Assembly to grant Arlington power to expand the use of speed cameras across the community.
In the original draft of the proposal, the one-paragraph policy statement said that giving localities more authority in automated traffic enforcement âhas the potential to improve safety, reduce unnecessary interactions between residents and police and further advance equitable outcomes by reducing or eliminating raced-based disparities in speed enforcement.â ....

County Board Speeds Up Timeline to Change the Arlington Logo

A new logo and seal for Arlington County could be chosen from community submissions in June of 2021.
Members of the County Board gave the go-ahead to a logo-change process during their recessed meeting Tuesday evening. Before doing so, Board members agreed to shorten the process by one month and asked county staff to come back in June with a timeline estimating how long it will take to phase out the logo.
“We’ve had this discussion since July,” Takis Karantonis said. “This logo is offensive, therefore we are really in a hurry to retire it and make it disappear from our official documents, etc.” ....

It would not be 2020 without at least one unexpectedly strange story from our County Board. Last week it was revealed by the Washington Post that Christian Dorsey’s bankruptcy claim was dismissed with prejudice for “an overt act of misrepresentation.”
This is the second time in recent memory that Dorsey has had a very public revelation of difficulty with being forthcoming after last year’s failure to disclose a $10,000 improper campaign contribution. And for the second time in a year, he has received a less than enthusiastic vote of confidence from fellow Arlington County Board members for his continued service. Board Chair Libby Garvey said she backed Mr. Dorsey “despite his personal financial issues.” ....
