If the US and New Zealand are willing to resettle the Biloela family then they are obviously refugees and not a threat to anyone (“Not coming home: Tamil family likely to be resettled overseas”, June 9). The Australian government should stop this intransigence and act with the compassion people expect of it.
Melanie Vertoudakis, Camperdown
Could this government inflict any more pain on the Biloela family? Yes. The vengeance of this government towards this sick three-year-old child and her family knows no bounds.

Laura Hansen of Naremburn has gone green: âI have recently discovered a bag of old plastic bags that for some reason were treasured, but itâs now time to clear them out. Has anyone else recently used a 1987 Harrods (Knightsbridge, London) shopping bag for their non-recyclable rubbish-bin liner? Mind you, it was obviously made from very tough plastic to still be in one piece in the cupboard. And it worries me to think how long it will take for it to break down. The thin plastic bags that we used to get in supermarkets have turned to ash-like material when stored for one year!â This could be a mistake. Granny noticed the âGreen Harrods classic bagâ on eBay going for a respectable $13 (or four payments of $3.25).
