My haven, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, 64, in the Speaker's study at the Palace of Westminster

1. Bickering with Boris
Boris the parrot, pictured
Boris and I don’t get on – if I want him to perch on my hand, he’ll try to nip me. I’m talking about my parrot, seen in this photo, not the PM!
He’s picked up a few of my phrases, like ‘point of order’, and sometimes startles passengers on the train by blurting out, ‘Lock the doors!’
My pets also include Betty, a Patterdale terrier [named after ex-Speaker Betty Boothroyd] and Maggie, an African sulcata tortoise, who’s got a hard shell and is not for turning.

Each run scored by a tail-ender has the same worth as one scored by a recognised batsman, and sometimes more when it entertains spectators, frustrates opponents or lifts team-mates’ spirits. ....

COLIN McDONALD 1928 - 2021
Australia’s consistent opening batsman Colin McDonald, who died last month aged 92, is remembered most for his sole resistance against England’s off-spinner Jim Laker in the July 1956 Old Trafford Test. McDonald had top-scored with 32 and 89 as Laker with incredibly mesmerising match figures of 19 wickets for 90 runs had routed Australia.

Not so well remembered is McDonald’s equally remarkable top scores of 53 and 34 in the Kanpur Test of December 1959 against India’s unorthodox off-spinner Jasu Patel who had captured 14 for 124. I had only listened to the commentary of the 1956 Old Trafford Test on ....
