SHOCK HAYES SPLIT AMICABLE – DABERNIG March 16, 2021 2:49 pm By Matt Stewart, Racing Editor
Tom Dabernig says his shock split with Ben Hayes was “very amicable” and that it was inevitable he would move on once the training ambitions of Hayes’ siblings grew closer to being realised. Lindsay Park today announced the dramatic alteration to the famous stable, revealing Dabernig would move on and that Ben Hayes’ 26-year-old brother JD would join him in partnership from the start of the new season, in August. “It was probably inevitable at some point. Ben’s other brother Will is also planning to join the business at some stage in the future and I just thought it was time for me to diversify a bit,” Dabernig said. ....
Coolmore Stud s Group 1-winning stallion Zoffany has died at the age of 13. Coolmore issued a statement on Friday confirming the son of Dansili was euthanised due to liver failure. “Zoffany was a great servant and he’ll be a big loss, said Coolmore’s David O’Loughlin in a statement. Zoffany won five races as a two-year-old, including the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh and alongside Nathaniel, the sire of Enable, was one of only two horses to finish within a length of unbeaten 14-start champion Frankel. That precocity was transferred to his progeny as he made an immediate impact as a stallion, producing three Royal Ascot two-year-old winners from his first crop in 2015. His initial crop also included Ventura Storm, one of three Group 1 winners he sired. ....

The vast majority of her winners, as is the case with most apprentices early in their career, settled top three, but she s won races during December with some intelligent off-pace rides, displaying greater timing and composure. I predict that Damien Oliver will win this season s Melbourne Jockeys Premiership. He s ridden almost enough seconds to complete a minute already this season although his choice of rides will be slightly impacted by the minimum weight in the metropolitan area returning to 54kg. ....

Master Montaro extended his unbeaten record to three in his new surrounds, winning the HK$1.5m (A$250,000) Snow Fairy Handicap (1200m) at Sha Tin by a neck. Zac Purton positioned Master Montaro ($2.20 favourite), with a Hong Kong handicap rating of 72, in the second half of the pack from barrier ten in the 14-horse field before finishing over the top of his 60 to 80 rated rivals. The victory provided Australian Hall of Fame trainer David Hayes with his ninth winner since returning to Hong Kong at the start of this season while Purton has won 32 races this season, 19 victories behind premiership leader Joao Moreira. ....
