Condit leaves council, joins Board of Supervisors
Channce Condit, Buck Condit and Vito Chiesa took the oath of office on Monday to become members of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. Judge Robert Westbook administered the oath.
Channce Condit officially left the Ceres City Council on Monday when he was sworn in as a new member of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.
Condit resigned from his Ceres City Council seat to take the District 2 supervisor’s role while his cousin once-removed Buck Condit now represents District 1, which covers the Oakdale, Riverbank areas.
Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Robert Westbrook conducted the swearing in ceremony while all three supervisors wore masks. Buck Condit congratulated the two others, joking that Hughson’s Vito Chiesa had a “real nail biter” race since he was unopposed to represent District 2. ....

A total of six persons want to be considered for three open seats on the Ceres Planning Commission. Two of them include current members who want to be re-appointed – Bob Kachel and Gary Del Nero.
The four other applicants are Julio Madrigal, Daniel Martinez, Angie Duarte-Smith and Rafael Valencia.
The election of Bret Silveira to the Ceres City Council created on vacancy on the Ceres Planning Commission this week. The terms of Kachel and Del Nero are expiring.
Other members on the commission are Chairwoman Laurie Smith and Dave Johnson.
The Planning Commission is a permanent advisory committee of citizens appointed by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the City Council. Meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. to consider land use matters such as zone changes, conditional use permits, variances, subdivisions and general plan amendments. ....

Council should revisit garbage can visibility
Now that we have a new Ceres City Council perhaps it will reverse the policy recently set that allows residents to keep their garbage cans in public view seven days a week.
As you may remember, the city had a law on the books that said you had to hide away your cans unless it was during the hours you could set them out for collection. In November 2019, three members of the old council changed that, saying they had no problems with cans being stored next to a house or garage. Those three – Chris Vierra, Bret Durossette and Mike Kline – are gone now. If Couper Condit is anything like his brother, he would vote to change back. Linda Ryno didn’t believe in letting cans be viewed from the street either. It remains to be seen how Bret Silveira and Mayor Javier Lopez would vote on the topic if it’s revisited. ....

Friday’s deadline for applications to be considered for appointment to the Ceres Planning Commission and the Measure H Oversight Committee ended with robust interest among citizens.
Six applications were received for three positions on the Planning Commission while three applications came in for two spots on the Measure H committee.
On Monday the Ceres City Council chose a committee to interview the applicants before appointments are made. Vice Mayor Linda Ryno asked to serve on the interview panel for the Planning Commission applicants, citing her nearly 30 years of serving as an employee in the city planning department. Mayor Jose Lopez agreed and also asked Councilman Bret Silveira to help him interview applicants for the Measure H Committee screening. The first meeting of the new Ceres City Council on Monday evening was punctuated by sharp disagreements over two topics.
Mayor Javier Lopez conducted his first full meeting since being elected on Nov. 3 and the first order of business was the appointment of a vice mayor among the four councilmembers. Linda Ryno has served as vice mayor for two years. Lopez recommended that new member Couper Condit serve as vice mayor. That prompted Ryno to ask: “So is this open to discussion or it strictly the mayor’s call?” City Attorney Tom Hallinan said it was open and subject to a council vote.
