Low percentage of vaccinated people contracting virus
HOUSTON – In this latest wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, breakthrough cases in people who have been fully vaccinated are getting a lot of attention, but doctors say they are extremely rare.
“They tend to be seen in folks who for whatever reason can’t mount a great immune response, like people who are elderly, immunocompromised, folks on dialysis folks on chemotherapy,” said Dr. Linda Yancey, infectious disease expert at Memorial Hermann.
Local health departments say they identify breakthrough cases by cross-checking positive lab results with Texas Health Trace the state’s COVID-19 disease reporting tool and ImmTrac, the state’s immunization database. ....

If One Mask Is Good for COVID Protection, Are Two Better?

Based on recent test results, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in February recommended double-masking to reduce the risk of COVID-19 viral transmissions.
For the record, “double-masking refers to wearing both a surgical mask and a cloth mask over the surgical mask,” says Paul Drain, MD, MPH, associate professor of global health, medicine (infectious diseases), and epidemiology at the University of Washington. He is the principal investigator of several studies into COVID-19 diagnoses. “The use of a disposable mask under a cloth mask has been shown to improve protection in a lab study, and this has been detailed on the CDC website,” Drain says. “Here the role of the cloth mask is mostly to push the surgical mask tight against the skin.” ....

Houston doctor provides tips fully vaccinated residents

Oak Forest’s Andrea Hindi is sending her two kids back to in-person school on Monday for the first time since last March. She is also making doctor’s appointments for things she let go over the past year.
The reason? Hindi is one of the 14 percent of people in the U.S. who are fully vaccinated, according to Dr. Linda Yancey, an infectious disease specialist with Memorial Hermann Health System.
Heights resident Jenna Taylor said hugging her fully vaccinated parents is the best part about being vaccinated.
“I m also more comfortable about meeting with friends outside and simple things, like going to the grocery store, feel way less stressful now,” Taylor said. “It s like having a weight lifted that you didn t even know was there.” ....
