SOFIA, Bulgaria - Canada s Sam Stewart was seconds away from qualifying for her first Olympic Games.
But the 31-year-old from London, Ont., saw her Tokyo dreams disappear with a double leg takedown by Romanian opponent Andreea Beatrice Ana with under five seconds to go at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament on Friday.
After the 4-2 loss, Stewart talked about a tough pre-Olympic season all but derailed by COVID-19. I think I wrestled really well, all things considered, Stewart told Wrestling Canada. It s been really hard to train and prepare for this event with everything that s happened. I definitely think I put my best foot forward.

In the 1990s, Dharamveer Malik was a regular on the Indian team that competed at the junior level in international wrestling competitions. The biggest event the former 76 kg age-group national champion would get to compete in was the Cadet World Championship of 1995, but he’d return without a podium finish. Five years later, he’d be forced to retire after a knee injury.
On Wednesday, his daughter Anshu, who wrestles in the 57 kg class, won a silver at the World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia. Malik senior couldn’t hold back tears.

Anshu Malik became the first Indian to finish on the podium at the Individual Wrestling World Cup, winning a silver medal in the women s 57kg division in Belgrade, Serbia. The 19-year-old lost to Moldova s Anastasia Nichita 5-1 in the final.
The result meant the Indian - a former world and Asian cadet champion - has medaled at each of the three international tournaments she s competed in. She made her senior debut in early 2020 at the stacked Matteo Pellicone Memorial meet in Rome. That spectacular run included victories over top caliber opponents like Canada s reigning 59kg world champion Linda Morais, and 2014 Youth Olympic Games champion Grace Bullen of Norway. She then won a bronze at the Asian Championships in New Delhi.
