Former Scarborough administrator left lasting impression

Paul Smithers was not far removed from being an impressionable teenager when he started working at Scarborough High School in the mid-1990s.
He was 24 years old and serving as a police officer for Houston Community College, which at the time held adult night classes at Scarborough. The man in charge of the Oak Forest campus was Joe McGee, who was in his 50s and worked during the day as Scarborough’s assistant principal.
Despite their differences in age, experiences and temperament, McGee and Smithers struck up a friendship that lasted until McGee died earlier this month at age 80. They talked about school, sports and life in general, with Smithers saying McGee helped him land subsequent jobs and further a law enforcement career that now has him working as a lieutenant investigator for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. ....

COVID college admissions season: Scattered joy, much anger

Print
The Burbank mother knew her high school senior would have a tough time competing for a freshman seat at a University of California campus in a year of record-shattering applications more than 200,000 students were vying for about 46,000 spots. Still, she thought her daughter with a 4.3 GPA, eight AP and honors courses and a host of extracurricular activities would have a shot.
She was floored in March when the campus notifications began rolling in. Out of seven UC campuses, her daughter was denied or wait-listed at all but UC Merced.
“It was heartbreaking,” said the parent, who asked for anonymity to protect her daughter’s privacy at a time of great disappointment. “And I got really angry. We just got the rug pulled out from under us. What more could our kids possibly have done?” ....

Isolation, Impostor Syndrome, Snail Mail: Why Fewer High School Seniors Are Applying For College Financial Aid

Lynda McGee, the college counselor at Downtown Magnets High School, keeps a list of names under the headline, in a spooky font, FAFSA Wall of Shame. It s a list of the school s seniors who haven t yet completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the 106-question form that can unlock tens of thousands of dollars in loans, grants and scholarships for college.
Students must file their FAFSA application by March 2 to get priority for California state aid for the 2021-22 school year. Applications for the California Dream Act for those without legal immigration status are also due March 2.
In what could be described, at least collectively, as the worst year in decades for high schoolers, even L.A. s most high-achieving public schools, like Downtown Magnets, are having to pull out all the stops to convince coronavirus-weary students they have a bright future ....

Daytona Beach getting new mosque, Islamic center at former YMCA site

DAYTONA BEACH  For more than a decade, the beat-up YMCA complex north of Mason Avenue has been dormant.
Its boarded up windows and doors, and the fading paint and grime that cover the large structures, only tell the story of what became of the first YMCA in Volusia County.
The dilapidation doesn t herald the news that the nearly 50-year-old complex is about six months away from a dramatic transformation. The vacant recreation buildings that were packed with kids for decades will become the new home of the Islamic Center of Daytona Beach.
We re absolutely excited, said Hassan Saboungi, a member of the current Islamic Center mosque and vice president of the construction company reinventing the complex. It has been a dream for the past 10 years-plus. ....

UC record college admission applications show wide diversity

The University of California’s record-shattering applications for fall 2021 show remarkable surges in Black, Latino and other underrepresented students seeking admission, putting the system within reach of dismantling long-standing admission barriers and building a student body that reflects the state’s diversity.
UCLA and UC Berkeley, the system’s two most selective campuses where diversity particularly tumbled after affirmative action was banned in public schools more than two decades ago achieved historic gains, according to preliminary UC data released Thursday. Black freshman applicants rose by about 48% at both campuses, and Latino applicants increased by 33% at UCLA and 36% at Berkeley.
Overall, UC’s nine undergraduate campuses drew a record number of applicants despite myriad pandemic challenges, totaling 249,855, a 16.1% leap over last year. Among Californians, Black freshman applicants increased by 21.8%. Latinos who have made up the largest proport ....
