A councillor has called for a review to ensure decision-making at Lichfield District Council is not disrupted by technical problems during online meetings.
It comes after a gathering of the planning committee was debating an application for a development at Drayton Bassett yesterday (8th March).
Cllr Steve Norman said technical issues during the online meeting meant parts of it could not be heard by those taking part or listening in.
The Labour group leader – who is not a member of the planning committee but was watching online – said the council could not risk having to delay decisions because of problems with technology. ....

One wonders whether we’d need to “look at the potential for changes to the terms used” if it was another of the protected characteristics that was being discriminated through use of language or whether it would just happen, with the minimum of fuss.
My comments were intended as a light-hearted view of the old-fashioned nature of LDC – the fact we had to have a debate and a motion had to be tabled before we stopped using “Cllr Mrs” as a title was a complete waste of all our time when there are far more important matters to discuss and nobody could object to the change without falling foul of the Equality Act. ....

Plans have been made for councillors in Lichfield and Burntwood to be given £300 each to support organisations in their area.

The scheme – which is a smaller version of a similar initiative at Staffordshire County Council – will be discussed at a Lichfield District Council overview and scrutiny committee meeting next week.
A report from cabinet member Cllr Ashley Yeates said the proposal would be for an initial two year pilot scheme to run.

Changes to the committee structure at Lichfield District Council must not lead to behind closed doors decision-making, a councillor has warned.

The proposals will see the number of overview and scrutiny groups reduced to one, with task groups set up to deal with issues instead.
Cllr Dave Robertson, Labour representative for Curborough ward, said that while he did not object to the idea, he did want reassurances over how such a system would work.
“Change is inevitable and finding new ways of doing things can generally bring up positive things.
“But I do have a concern about the transparency, availability and openness of those decision-making groups. ....
