Board of Education Opposes Bill That Takes Aim at Charter Schools
The Orange County Board of Education passed a resolution June 2 to oppose a bill that it claims would harm charter schools.
Introduced by California Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach), AB 1316 will move through the State Assembly in June.
The bill would cut funding by 30 percent for non-classroom-based charter schools, Orange County Board of Education vice president Ken Williams said in a statement. It would also prohibit charters from receiving funding for students who transferred from outside their home county or school district, he said. Charter school operators would also be hit with higher operator and administrative fees, he said. ....

Citing parental rights, O.C. Board of Education weighs in against nonexistent vaccine mandates

As Orange County wrestles with vaccine hesitancy, the county’s Board of Education on Wednesday night approved a statement against mandatory vaccinations and a resolution against digital vaccine passports.
The board voted 4-1 in favor of each, with the only dissenting votes coming from board member Rebecca Gomez, who serves Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, portions of Garden Grove and portions of Tustin.
“The Board stands side-by-side with Orange County residents against mandatory vaccinations, particularly of school-age children,” the board’s statement reads. “The Board has repeatedly proven itself to be a strong supporter of parental rights and vehemently condemns and opposes any effort to curtail parents’ authority to make the best choices for their children. Schools are for inculcating facts and knowledge, and not advancing vaccination mandates for children who are at very little risk of the COVID-19 pathogen. The Board is grateful to our constituents ....

Chapman University president self-isolating at home after testing positive for coronavirus

As Chapman University students crammed for exams last week before the end of fall semester, President Daniele Struppa announced he was self-isolating at home after testing positive last Wednesday for the coronavirus.
“I want to share the news that today I tested positive for COVID-19,” Struppa began in a Dec. 16 message to staff, faculty and students. “I am feeling tired and am resting at home, but overall, my symptoms are not extreme and currently limited to a slight fever and cough.”
Struppa, 65, said he likely caught the virus from his 16-year-old daughter, who’d tested positive on Monday, the same day he himself began experiencing symptoms. Given the timing of everything, Struppa estimated his window of contagion likely began sometime around Dec. 12. ....
