In her first year at UVM, lecturer Lisa Dion established the first Vermont Girls Who Code chapter (photo: Sally McCay). After completing graduate school at the University of Michigan in 2016, Lisa Dion cast about for a summer internship before taking up her duties as a lecturer at UVM. Then an ad for a program called Girls Who Code caught her eye. “Women are definitely underrepresented in computer science and working toward gender parity is something close to my heart,” Dion said. She had never heard of Girls Who Code but was intrigued enough to apply for a summer position. She was accepted and soon found herself in Atlanta receiving a week of intensive training. As a newly minted Girls Who Code instructor, she taught a seven-week course that summer to 20 girls. ....

Starting Feb. 17, mothers of Connecticut Children’s NICU patients at UConn Health will have access to the Keriton Kare app, which will enable them and their care team to monitor feedings to maximize safety and efficacy. Mothers can use the app to track their pumping sessions and milk supply. The Keriton platform uses a barcode system for the milk or formula specific to each patient, securely and in compliance with patient privacy regulations. It can monitor the feed preparation process beyond the bedside, notify when supplies are low or milk is nearing expiration, track pumping supplies and counsel when appropriate, and provide patient engagement tools to help with pumping breast milk. ....
