Soya Sienkiewicz

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother Soya, aged 89, a former, long-time resident of Thunder Bay. Mom was born in Belarus in September 1931. After enduring the tragedies of WWII, she came to Canada in 1948 with her mother Maria and sister Helen.
She worked in Toronto and finally Fort William where she married and raised her family. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, needlework, drawing, pets and reading, particularly about history, geography and anatomy. She never forgot a birthday or family life event and always sent cards and personal notes to everyone. We treasure those notes, drawings and her journals. Mom and Dad were able to spend their last few years together at a LTC home in Welland, where Dad predeceased Mom 2 years ago. ....

OK, let’s get this out of the way up front it’s about time 2020 exits stage left.
There is so much not to like about this unpredictable, tragic year. We’ve chronicled many of the struggles in the region, from the veterans at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke who died from COVID-19 and the ensuing investigations into wrongdoing, to the dozens of businesses that simply couldn’t survive, the empty venues that shuttered live entertainment, and the isolation felt by young and old alike after months in lockdown. ....
