LPS looking to name its three new schools

Today, the Lincoln Board of Education is asking the community to help name them!
If you’re interested, submit suggested names to
lps.org from Feb. 8 – 28.
The three new schools include:
A high school near NW 48th and W Holdrege Streets, opening in the fall of 2022. This will be the seventh LPS high school and will house the new Medical Science Focus Program.
A high school near 70th and Saltillo Road, opening in the fall of 2023. This will be the eighth LPS high school.
An elementary school near E 102nd and S Holdredge Streets, opening in the fall of 2022. This will be the 40th elementary school in LPS. ....

Lincoln schools to be first in state to join vaping lawsuit

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Lincoln Public Schools is set to become the first Nebraska school district to join hundreds of other districts across the county in suing a major vaping company.
The Lincoln Board of Education on Tuesday gave its lawyers approval to file a federal lawsuit against Juul Labs Inc., the Lincoln Journal Star reported. The lawsuit, like others, accuses Juul of creating a highly addictive product and targeting young people with fruity and minty flavors and easily concealed pods.

Lincoln officials said the lawsuit will be filed in Nebraska’s U.S. District Court and later consolidated with lawsuits from 22 states in a California federal court. ....

Staff at LPS elementary schools test positive at higher rate than general population


Staff at Lincoln s public elementary schools test positive for COVID-19 at a higher rate than the general population, though staff at middle and high schools do not. 
Those are among the findings of the latest school-based number-crunching, an exercise that Lincoln Board of Education member and public health doctor Bob Rauner said reveals a problem, but a fixable one.
“This, to me, was really helpful,” he said. “I was worried we were putting teachers in a really unsafe situation.”
Overall, he said, the rates of coronavirus cases are only slightly higher for staff than all Lancaster County residents of the same age: 3.1% for LPS staff ages 20-64, compared to 2.9% for Lancaster County residents in the same age range. ....
