Burrell headlines 1st Rio Grande HS HOF class

She competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and the 2004 Games in Athens.
One of the elite female athletes that followed Burrell in the South Valley, Natalie Martinez (1996), a stellar basketball and softball player, is also going to be recognized.
Two important coaches in the school’s history Prentis Jones (cross country, track) and Ron Contreras (wrestling) are to be honored as well. Contreras helped to build the Ravens’ consistently excellent wrestling program. Both Jones and Contreras are deceased.
Others to be inducted include Michael Walker, a three-sport athlete who played in the mid-1960s, and coach Art De La Cruz, who had two stints as a coach at Rio Grande and he was part of the drive to get a swimming pool on campus. ....

New PED ruling could hasten prep season

The state’s Public Education Department on Monday put its foot on the proverbial gas pedal.
PED Secretary Ryan Stewart said no longer will high school sports teams across the state need to endure the 14-day waiting period to clear COVID-19 protocols before they begin full practices.
This development could and perhaps will allow districts like Albuquerque Public Schools to enter their fall varsity sports schedules at least a week earlier than previously planned.
“Regardless of (their) re-entry designation, we are now moving into eligibility for (New Mexico Activities Association) participation without the previous two-week waiting period,” Stewart said Monday afternoon. ....

February football, anyone?
The New Mexico State University football team will take a stab at something completely different Sunday, taking on Tarleton State at the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
It’s a long-awaited moment for the Aggies, who did not participate in fall football because of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s the first of two spring games for NMSU, which will also host Dixie State at the Sun Bowl on March 6. ....
