Kangra farmers fume as govt demands back welfare fund

The government decision to recover money paid to beneficiaries under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana over the past two years has farmers fuming. Initially, the authorities persuaded them to apply under the scheme and now they were being harassed in the name of recovery, they allege.
Why the recovery
Initially, money was given to all applicants under the scheme as the Centre had not laid down criteria for deciding beneficiaries
Now, many categories of people have been excluded from the list of beneficiaries and told to return the money already credited to their accounts
Recoveries are being made from 2,772 farmers in Kangra district, including 2,409 income tax payees and 363 others. ....

Himachal MLA 'beats up' truck driver in middle of road, hurls 'caste slurs'

Independent MLA from Dehra in Himachal Pradesh Hoshiar Singh was booked under the SC/ST Act late on Tuesday on the complaint of a truck driver from his constituency, Sanjeet Kumar.
In his complaint, Sanjeet, a resident of Paisa village, alleged that around 2.30 pm on Tuesday when he was returning to Dehra from Ranital after getting his oil tanker repaired, a white Fortuner came speeding from the opposite direction near Parmar petrol pump in Sunhet on the Rantial-Dehra road.
To avoid a collision with the vehicle, the driver alleged, he turned his tanker towards the left side. The Fortuner still derailed from the road, though a collision was averted, he claimed. ....

Locals object to structures at Himachal heritage site

Residents are up in arms against the raising of structures in the Chamba Chaugan area here. The area was declared a heritage zone by the state in 1995, so no construction can be undertaken in the Chaugan area.
Kangra painting artist and Padma Shri awardee Vijay Sharma says the administration had earlier tried to raise tin sheds in the area using funds provided by the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). The construction was pulled down after prominent citizens objected to that.

Surge in Covid cases hits business hard in Kangra

Rising coronavirus cases in last fortnight have once again hit economic activity in Kangra district. Most of the private enterprises in the region have been hit badly once again due to restrictions being put in place in the wake of increasing Covid cases.
Dhaba and restaurant owners said that their business had started to look up after about six months and people had started to come out of their houses to dine out after the lockdown was eased. Now, due to the increasing Covid cases, their business has come to a virtual halt.
Rakesh Kumar, a restaurant owner, said that he had called his staff back after six months. “However, now once again I will have to close down and send employees home in case the situation does not improve,” he said. ....
