Windship Technology has revealed a novel ship design, promising to be the first economically viable zero-emission ship. With increasing pressure on the shipping industry to curb its growing carbon dioxide (CO

Windship Technology unveils 'True Zero Emission' ship design

British firm Windship Technology has unveiled a ‘True Zero Emission’ ship design based on the company’s patented triple-wing rig, a new diesel electric ship drive system and the incorporation of large solar arrays.
The technical and design teams at Windship said the innovative all-ship solution is able to eliminate CO2, NOx, SOx and particulate matter (PM) to ‘True Zero’, helping the shipping industry to meet stricter emission guidelines.
“The holistic approach demonstrated in this solution whereby wind power, solar power and the reduction of harmful exhaust emissions to effectively zero, are all brought together, means that at last there is a design solution that the International Maritime Organisation can champion to achieve its requirements for ‘at least’ zero carbon shipping,” said Professor Philip Wilson, formerly Professor of Ship Dynamics at the Ship Science Department at the Univer ....

Windship Technology unveils true zero emission ship design

According to the company, the triple-wing rigs produce a driving force ‘several multiples greater’ than currently available single masted solutions of the same height. The 48m Windship Technology rig, developed using technology and design from the wind turbine industry, is stowable on deck.
The company has announced a partnership with the international registrar and classification society DNV, who will be conducting an outside-in and inside-out verification to fully assess the whole-ship design.
Per Marius Berrefjord, senior VP of DNV, said that they will work closely with the project team to verify the vessel’s emissions reduction capability. “We are also preparing for a HAZID [hazard identification] that shall verify the safety and operability of ships with Windship Technology installed,” he added. ....
