Conversations continue on future of Larchmont Boulevard : Larchmont Chronicle

Local stakeholders last month continued their dialogue over the future of Larchmont Boulevard.
As reported in April, questions have been raised over recent weeks as to whether parking spaces might be permanently replaced with outdoor restaurant dining now that pandemic-related restrictions are ending.
That also propelled discussion about perennial Larchmont topics like the existing limitations on certain types of businesses such as restaurants. Further, with Larchmont Boulevard celebrating its centennial year in 2021, it seems to many residents to be a good time to reevaluate how local neighborhoods interact with, and envision the future of, the historic shopping district.
The Larchmont Boulevard Association (LBA) is spearheading the effort. It seeks an organized discussion through the committee it convened, headed by LBA board member Patty Lombard. ....

Community to discuss future of Larchmont : Larchmont Chronicle

“RESTAURANT ROW” on Larchmont has another new deck for dining in place of six metered parking spaces in front of Le Petit Greek and Village Pizzeria.
Although indoor restaurant dining, on a very reduced scale, is currently allowed, local Larchmont restaurateurs and some diners are wondering if outdoor dining-in-the-street should stay a focus on the Boulevard. At press time, there were five reasonably expansive outdoor table installations replacing former metered parking spaces in the block of Larchmont between First Street and Beverly Boulevard. Several of these include wooden decking, railings, and other improvements.
One new wood deck, finished just a week ago, is in the middle of Larchmont’s veritable “Restaurant Row” that includes between 121 and 139-1/2 N. Larchmont: Kreation Organic Juicery, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Muraya Sushi, Le Petit Greek, Village Pizzeria, Sweetfin Poke and Uncool Burgers. ....

Spring brings hope to the Boulevard : Larchmont Chronicle

LOUISE’S, in Larchmont Village, is among local restaurants offering casual dining-in-the-street.
With spring’s arrival this month, Larchmont Village is eager to leave the worst of the pandemic behind with new historic photo posters displayed in storefronts, new shops to open, and the return of outdoor dining. Not to mention Village Heights is celebrating its 15th anniversary on Larchmont! Here’s what’s happening on the Boulevard.
Sidewalk Sale cancelled
For the first time in many years, the Larchmont Boulevard Association (LBA) has cancelled its annual spring Sidewalk Sale for the Larchmont shopping district. Among the reasons for the cancellation are that there are fewer retail merchants currently operating on the Boulevard because of empty storefronts and construction, as well as a lack of sidewalk space due to that construction, according to John Winther, president of the LBA. ....

Joane Pickett was more than a friendly face: Pickett Fences closes after 27 years on Blvd. : Larchmont Chronicle

JOANE Pickett and her husband, Wiley, with the late Councilman Tom LaBonge.
To say that closing her beloved Larchmont Boulevard store of 27 years, Pickett Fences, was completely traumatizing, would be the understatement of the year. But that is what happened, and this is where we are.
The pandemic has taken a devastating toll on many Larchmont businesses, both restaurant and retail, and as the pandemic wears on, month after month, and as the boulevard continues to change with the pandemic pushing it along, we are all witnesses to its transformation. But before we look forward, it’s imperative to look back, through the lens of one person and the little store that could … until it couldn’t. ....

'Professor Know-It-All' knew it all for 32 years at Chronicle : Larchmont Chronicle

Bentley first pitched the idea to Jane Gilman, founder and former publisher of the Chronicle, because he thought the paper needed something lighthearted and fun. The two were attending a Larchmont Boulevard Association board cocktail party after the Larchmont Family Fair and began discussing what the column should be called. Someone nearby joked that Bentley thought he “knew everything,” which gave them the idea for “Mr. Know-It-All,” which quickly morphed into “Professor Know-It-All.”
Thus began Bentley’s first column, appearing on page 16 of the first section in the February 1988 issue.
To solicit queries based on word and phrase history, Bentley wrote his first column on three questions he himself was curious about. ....
