New Jersey commission overturns Renan Ferreira's PFL 3 win over Fabricio Werdum

The New Jersey Athletic Control Board on Monday overturned Renan Ferreira’s knockout win over Fabricio Werdum at PFL 3, changing the result to a no-decision after Werdum’s camp appealed to the commission.
Ferreira was declared the winner of the bout this past Thursday when he knocked out Werdum with a series of strikes after being caught in a triangle choke. Referee Keith Peterson missed a pair of taps by Ferreira that were caught on camera as Werdum applied the choke.
After reviewing the footage and consulting experts, NJSACB commissioner Larry Hazzard Sr. decided to overturn the result, per ESPN, citing referee Peterson’s admission that he would “likely had stopped the contest” had he seen Ferreira’s tap. ....

ON November 22, 1997, 48-year-old George Foreman fought 25-year-old Shannon Briggs at the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City for what was styled as the lineal heavyweight championship of the world.
Foreman, at age 45, had claimed the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation heavyweight titles on November 5, 1994, with a stunning tenth round knockout of Michael Moorer. Four months later, he was stripped of the WBA belt for refusing to make a mandatory defence against Tony Tucker. Then, after successfully defending his IBF crown against Axel Schultz, he was stripped of that too for not fighting a mandated rematch against Schulz. ....

Contrary to so many high-profile cases related to fouls in MMA, where truth and/or justice reside in a nebulous grey area, this instance is surprisingly cut and dry. Illegal and idiotic or not, Yan’s ill-fated knee is just the latest reminder of what makes the Unified Rules’ treatment of knees to a downed opponent so fatuous and aggravating.
In the immediate aftermath, much was made of Yan’s corner yelling at him. While “Punches!” was clear in English, there was debate over whether his Russian seconds urged him to “strike” or specifically, “knee”. After the bout, however, Yan effectively made this a non-issue, stating he was focused on Sterling’s hands and thought his challenger was crouching. He screwed up, he knew he did and was appropriately sportsmanlike and contrite. It’s as much as you could ask for out of a fighter screwing up so royally in such a lofty position. ....
