Flagler Beach city officials continue search for new city manager

FLAGLER BEACH Officials narrowed the list of city manager candidates to five during a special meeting Dec. 15. But in the days that followed, two candidates removed their names from consideration.
Lee Evett and Ben Newhouse were part of the five selected to move forward in the hiring process, but decided to pull their applications. Evett accepted the new interim administrator position with the City of Lake Helen.
The remaining city manager candidates include John Barkley, Stanley Hawthorne and William Whitson. The city selected three back-up candidates: Dru Driscoll, current deputy city manager of Daytona Beach; David Strohl; and Steven Wheeler. ....

County Scraps Rent-Free Space for Senior Meals in Flagler Beach to Pay $3,000 a Month, With $1,200 Yearly Increases

Flagler County’s meals for seniors program has been feeding the elderly in need since 1978, first at Flagler Beach City Hall and Bunnell City Hall. In 1983 it moved to Flagler Beach’s Wickline Senior Center on South Daytona Avenue, where it’s been since, rent-free. The Wickline Center was once owned by the county.
The building was ceded to Flagler Beach many years ago, on the condition that the county would continue using it for its daily senior program.
This evening, the Flagler County Commission voted 4-1 to end that long, rent-free relationship and approve instead a plan that would move the program to Church on the Rock in Bunnell and pay the church $3,000 a month in rent the first year, rising by $100 a month per year over the potential 15-year life of the lease, so that by year two, rent would be $3,100 a month, and reach $4,500 a month by year 15. ....

Fred Griffith, Flagler Beach's City Engineer, Abruptly Announces Retirement 'Under Duress' After Reprimand

Fred Griffith, Flagler Beach’s city engineer since 2017, tendered what amounted to a resignation on Thursday, saying he was “announcing my impending retirement under duress.”
Griffith was planning not to work anymore until his official retirement date of Jan. 22, using two personal days and vacation time between Dec. 14 and Jan. 22.
Griffith, who was not infrequently at odds with residents and has drawn his share of emails to commissioners or the city manager, complaining about his style, had been reprimanded with his second “verbal warning” in 10 days (in writing) not long before he wrote his retirement memo to Rick McFadden, the acting city manager. “Look no further! I’m ready to be Flagler Beach’s next City Manager.” It’s not the sort of opening line elected officials expect to see in a cover letter when recruiting for their next executive, though it states more explicitly what every applicant by definition believes when applying.
Kathy Laur, the town administrator in Tonka Bay, a lakeside community of 1,500 people in the outer suburbs of Minneapolis, is the author of that opening line. She’s been the administrator for barely a year, but she’s ready to leave.
