The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts has voted to approve Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto’s proposed redesign of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
The decision, made in a split 5–2 vote by a committee including four new Joe Biden appointees, none of whom are landscape architects, was not without controversy.
“The Hirshhorn benefitted at the Commission of Fine Arts today from the commissioners’ lack of experience, the commissioners’ lack of understanding of commission policies and procedures, and because for the first time in some 20 years, not one of the commissioners is a landscape architect,” Charles A. New campus buildings to house centers for innovation and collaboration
Several new facilities, including Tangen Hall and the Academic Research Building, have finished construction and the University is eyeing opening dates. Penn Today provides an overview.
The glass exterior of Tangen Hall, which crews began construction on in summer 2018 and completed in December 2020. It was designed as a space for innovation and collaboration in entrepreneurship.
In its 281-year history, Penn has seen several campus evolutions. From the opening of the first school of medicine in North America to the opening of College Hall in 1871, the first cornerstone of Fisher Fine Arts Library in 1888 to the 2008 opening of the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, the campus continues to embrace new spaces and, with them, new styles of learning, research, and access. ....
