Nursing home funding and oversight come in large part from government budgets that can be stingy. But most nursing homes are privately owned, meaning there is little transparency into their finances and operations. Rhode Island is back in the spotlight with the second highest seven-day coronavirus infection rate in the world at 671 cases per 100,000 population, according to a report in NBC News.
Arizona is the highest at 785, and we lead California’s 658. In comparison, the Czech Republic had a seven-day infection rate of 653.
93,852 Rhode Islanders have tested positive to date, approaching 10% of the total population of the state. The actual number infected is probably much higher. The daily infection rate of 95.8 is 16% higher than the 82.9 when the ‘Pause’ was started on November 30, and stopped on December 20. Earlier this fall, many of the nation’s restaurants opened their doors to patrons to eat inside, especially as the weather turned cold in places. Now, as COVID-19 cases surge across the country, some cities and towns have banned indoor dining while others have permitted it with restrictions. Still other geographies have no bans at all.
The restaurant and hospitality industry has reacted strongly, filing lawsuits challenging indoor dining bans and, in New York state, pointing to data that showed restaurants and bars accounted for only 1.4% of cases there far lower compared with private gatherings. ....
