Attorney General Josh Stein Fights to Protect Students from Bullying

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve schools’ ability to address cyberbullying and other forms of off-campus bullying that substantially affect students’ education.
“When bullies target students, they no longer just do it at school during the day,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “Our young people can be bullied anywhere, at any time. It’s one of the most troubling consequences of technology, and the harm students experience can last long after graduation. I urge the Supreme Court to uphold schools’ ability to protect students from bullying, wherever they are.” ....

Physicians Flee Hospital Group After HCA Takeover

HCA Healthcare completed its $1.5-billion acquisition of western North Carolina s Mission Health in 2019, but the nonprofit sale to a for-profit entity hasn t been without scrutiny. Following reports from the local community of charity care that s difficult for patients to understand and declines in service, a slew of physician departures is now turning heads.
Dogwood Health Trust a foundation formed with proceeds from the sale to monitor HCA s compliance with obligations of the deal and to invest in the health and well-being of North Carolinians hasn t notified HCA of any issues of noncompliance to date. But the recent or impending loss of more than a dozen physicians has caught the attention of the North Carolina Attorney General s Office as well as the independent monitor put in place to advise Dogwood Health Trust. ....

Laura Brewer has seen her new business thrive in lockdown with the help of the farming community
THE FARMING community has helped boost a new businesses which was founded weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic began.
While on maternity leave from her job in January last year Laura Brewer, from Ross-on-Wye, decided to turn her love for painted nails into her own business.
She retrained as a nail technician before founding Pink Wellies Nails not knowing the challenges her first year is business would bring.
I enjoyed my job for a farm and food software company but I wanted to see if I could work so I didn t have to go back, said Mrs Brewer. ....

Fight over Smithfield funds could endanger North Carolina environmental projects


A ruling by the N.C. Court of Appeals this month could mean more money for cash-strapped schools across the state. But environmentalist fear the decision  while widely viewed as a battle between the legislative and executive branches of state government over who should control the purse strings also could mean less money for projects aimed at protecting and enhancing water quality, especially in Eastern North Carolina.
The legal question involves who should control funds collected by the state from North Carolina’s largest hog producer. Dubbed the Smithfield Agreement, the deal hammered out in 2000 was a result of years of wrangling between the state and the company over water quality woes and other problems associated with the open-air hog waste lagoons at Smithfield s farms, primarily located in Eastern North Carolina s coastal plain. The issue came to a head during 1999 s Hurricane Floyd, when the storm s record-setting rainfalls sent the waste from many hog lagoons ....
