Board of Education Budget News
The Town held its Annual Town Meeting on Saturday April 24.  It was great to see and talk to everyone in person after all these months!  During the meeting the Town voted to move the Board of Education’s fiscal 2021-2022 general operating budget as approved by the Board of Finance as well as the Town’s fiscal 2021-2022 general operating budget forward to referendum.  
The Town Referendum will be on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at the East Ridge Middle School between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.   In addition, at the April 24 Annual Town Meeting, various capital projects under $100,000 for both Town and the Board of Education were voted on and approved.  Capital projects over $100,000 will be voted on at referendum.   ....

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities have a long history in the United States, from Filipino sailors arriving as early as the 1750s to the present day, with AAPIs who have origins in more than 30 countries and number 22 million, nearly 6 percent of the U.S. population. Despite this growing presence, there remains a gap in curricula regarding AAPI communities and their experiences in our schools.
Children’s literature offers one way to close this gap. Multicultural education experts, including Emily Style and Rudine Sims Bishop, developed the idea of children’s literature serving as “windows” into others’ realities and “mirrors” for children from backgrounds that have been historically excluded to see themselves and their families reflected in texts. ....

The parents of a terminally ill Texas doctor have expressed their shock and sorrow for the first time since their son allegedly shot another physician, and then himself amid a deadly hostage situation at a hospital earlier this week.
According to authorities, Dr. Bharat Narumanchi burst into Children’s Medical Group in Austin on Tuesday with a pistol, what appeared to be a shotgun and two duffel bags. He was met by five employees, including 43-year-old Dr. Katherine Lindley Dodson, who did not survive the five-hour siege. ....
