With food insecurity currently seen in one in seven families, resurgence of a victory garden can provide a public health benefit. The victory garden movement began with World War I and returned during World War II. Americans planted gardens to support local community needs and to help feed our troops. Victory Gardens were grown in nearly every spare patch of land in private gardens, public lands, parks, playgrounds and churchyards. Even window boxes and front-step containers became useful Victory Gardens. By the end of WWII there were more than 20 million gardens and these produced some 8 million tons of food. ....

Dr. Vogel retires from health agency, job posted Vogel has served in the position for the past eight years. The position is part-time. A recommendation to interview Dr. Tim Miller, who succeeded Vogel in September 2017 as head of the now ProMedica Regional Hospital Family Practice Clinic, had some opposition from the board of health at its March meeting. Now the job is posted. Vogel had recommended Miller. Agency health officer Rebecca Burns suggested board members meet individually with him. Vogel became medical director for the agency in October 2013, succeeding Dr. James Philips. He held both jobs until leaving the family practice clinic. ....
Don Reid [email protected] As the number of new COVID-19 infections fall, Branch-Hillsdale-St Joseph Health Agency has encountered community questions about restrictions, including restaurants limited to 25% capacity and schools not returning to full in-person instruction. Restrictions have become political topics. At the agency’s board meeting Thursday, St. Joseph County commissioner Jared Hoffmaster wanted to know if masks continue to be a requirement in schools. This came after Three Rivers went from full-time in-person classes to a hybrid two-days-per-week approach, because of COVID-19 infections. Hoffmaster said it is a political issue “because parents want their children back in school.” ....
