Fall River blighted properties razed through Building Blocks Program

FALL RIVER Thanks to the revitalized Building Blocks Program under Mayor Paul Coogan s administration there are two less extremely blighted properties in two Fall River neighborhoods and some pretty happy residents.
“This should have been done a long time ago,” said Lawton Street resident Antonio Quental. “There were rats and animals living in there, especially in winter. It feels like it s been like that for 10,000 years.”
Quental has lived across from 230 Lawton Street, a bungalow that was abandoned for years and determined by city inspectors that the structure could not be saved.
Funding for demolition or rehabilitation
The city, through the Community Development Agency, has again partnered with the Abandoned Housing Initiative Receivership program through the state Attorney General’s office. A 23-year-old man and a female passenger were robbed of thousands of dollars and a car by several armed suspects outside a Westchester bank, police said.
An officer on patrol at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Monday, May 3 in New Rochelle was approached by a man who said he was robbed at gunpoint by three Hispanic men who stole his car and $3,000 in cash.
New Rochelle Police Capt. Cosmo Costa said that the victim stated that he had made an arrangement to meet someone familiar to him on Lawton Street in the city to purchase a vehicle.
It is alleged that the victim took out the cash at Chase Bank on North Avenue, and as he was exiting the parking structure onto North Avenue, he found his vehicle was blocked in by a blue sedan that was occupied by three men. ....

NEW ROCHELLE - A man had his car and $3,000 in cash stolen from him late Monday night, city police said.
According to New Rochelle police, the unidentified victim told them he had arranged to meet a person he knows on Lawton Street to purchase a car, and had just withdrawn $3,000 from the Chase Bank on North Avenue for that purpose.
The victim told police he was exiting the parking garage onto North Avenue around 11:55 p.m. when his car was blocked by a blue sedan occupied by three men. ....
