ALBANY - The federal Paycheck Protection Program, started last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, has been a popular lifeline for businesses in New York.
Companies, mainly small businesses, have received more than 700,000 low-interest loans and been approved for up to $60 billion in relief, federal records showed.
The money is part of the so-called PPP that was created in the CARES Act approved by Congress in March 2020, and the time to apply ends May 31.
“The PPP loans were a tremendous and vital lifeline during what was one of the most significant economic disruptions in New York State history, Heather Briccetti, president of the state Business Council, said in a statement. ....

The list of PPP applicants reflects the difficult year COVID had on small businesses, including restaurants.
For example, dairy manufacturer O-At-Ka Milk Products in western New York and Perry’s Ice Cream in Akron, east of Buffalo, received $6 million and $5 million, respectively.
Another notable restaurant chain in upstate New York, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, took out a $5.2 million loan.
The program was initially funded at $349 billion, but subsequent federal stimulus packages included more money for the program as companies seek to rebound from the pandemic s economic toll.
The loans helped preserve more than 3 million jobs in New York, the federal government said last year. ....
