As members of both the Latinx community and the House of Representatives, we recognize our unique responsibility to support leadership that can best advance the Latinx equity agenda. To this end, we held a forum on December 23rd with the two declared candidates for Speaker of the House. The process remained open and an email invitation was sent to all House members, however, no additional candidates came forward.
The COVID-19 pandemic has blatantly exposed the negative and disproportionate impact of systemic disinvestment and disenfranchisement on the Latinx community. Beyond the grim health, education, housing, and economic data that reveals the brutality of the current crisis on our community, Latinx House members have experienced first-hand the devastation in our own families and neighborhoods. And all of this, happening against a backdrop of unrelenting anti-immigrant sentiment that has been battering our community for the past few years. ....
