ISD 196 Hires New Equity Coordinator

EAGAN, MN Independent School District 196 hired a coordinator of equity and inclusion.
Violeta Hernandez Espinosa will join the district s new Equity and Inclusion Department, directed by Virgil Jones, on July 1, the district said.
As a social justice advocate, I believe that true, positive societal change rests in creating equitable access to opportunities for underserved communities, Hernandez Espinosa said. This position gives me the opportunity to continue that work and improve the lives of all children and families in District 196.

Hernandez Espinosa graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with degrees in both international management and Spanish, the district said. She later returned to the college as assistant dean of admissions and coordinator of multicultural recruitment, where she first met Jones, the district said. ....

Protests in Chicago: Black, Brown unity still a goal since George Floyd


A week after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, a large crowd of mostly Latinos gathered under the arch leading to Little Village’s bustling 26th Street.
People knelt during a moment of silence for Floyd. The smell of sage swept through the crowd as part of an indigenous ritual.
Some people waved signs stating “Black Lives Matter” while others held posters proclaiming solidarity between Latino and Black communities.
The gathering reignited a rallying cry for Black and Brown unity after video depicting Floyd’s death led to a racial reckoning across the country. In Chicago, shifting racial demographics, longstanding segregation and differing views on the role of police have put that goal to the test. ....

Disability Advocacy Organization Opens Exclusive Spanish Intake Hours

The exclusive Spanish intake hours aren t yet very popular, according to outreach coordinator and bilingual intake specialist Vanessa Santos-Nila. But she expects them to gain more attention with time.
Disability Rights Iowa (DRI) provides advocacy and legal assistance to people with disabilities. In an effort to reach all of Iowa’s populations, they have added an exclusive schedule solely for Spanish speakers: Tuesdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The head of Sioux City’s NAACP reflects on the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd.
“We have seen change that people are talking about, but I don’t know we can put our teeth into it, because things are still happening.”
That is Ike Rayford who is talking about incidents involving injustice against Black men across the country.
He say accountability is important and is happening in the case surrounding Officer Dereck Chauvin convicted in the murder of  George Floyd and the upcoming litigation involving the other officers in the case.
Rayford says he is satisfied with tranparancy shown by local law enforcement. The Sioux City Police Department started using body cameras late last year. ....
