Stormont commits to funding Troubles pension scheme
Pledge ends lengthy dispute over whether funding should come from Belfast or London

Stormont Ministers have committed to pay for a pension scheme for victims of the North’s Troubles, ending a long-running dispute over whether funding should come from Belfast or London.
They said this would provide “reassurance and confidence” to victims and survivors that “payments will be made when they fall due under the terms of the scheme, regardless of where the funding comes from”.
However in a joint statement on Monday, the North’s First, Deputy First, Justice and Finance Ministers said they would continue to seek a contribution from the UK government. ....

'The crate escape': Two Irishmen who helped mail friend home from Australia sought


He bought a wooden crate the size of a mini-fridge and booked his slot with Qantas airline. The Irish pair helped to harness him into the crate and nail it shut. It was a tight fit as it also contained his suitcase and pillows as well as a flashlight and a book of Beatles songs to keep him company.
Horrific experience
Mr Robson was not expecting a pleasant journey, but it was still much worse than he had bargained for. “It was quite a horrific experience, in truth.”
The journey from Melbourne to London was supposed to take 36 hours but that flight was full, so he was loaded onto a Pan Am flight which took a much slower route. ....
