Two arrested for hurling petrol bomb at woman | Coimbatore News

(Representative image) COIMBATORE: The Selvapuram police on Saturday arrested two people, including a minor, for hurling a petrol bomb at a 54-year-old woman following a petty quarrel. Police identified them as V Puviyarasu, 19, of North Housing Unit at Selvapuram and a 17-year-old Selvapuram resident. They had attacked K Vasuki of Mahaliamman Temple Street at Selvapuram. “On Friday around 9pm, Vasuki, who was returning from a temple, saw Afsal, a local resident, kicking her neighbour’s dog, which was tied to her gate. When she raised an alarm, Afsal managed to escape from the place. Vasuki and her neighbours questioned a 17-year-old boy who was with Afsal. The boy said that Afsal kicked the dog after it barked at them. Vasuki threatened to handover the duo to police if the dog is attacked again,” a police officer said.

Minor boy arrested for raping girl | Coimbatore News

Representative image COIMBATORE: A minor boy was arrested by the city police on Monday for allegedly abducting a 17-year-old girl to Udumalpet in Tirupur district and raping her repeatedly. A native of Nagapattinam district, the 17-year-old boy was working at a soap manufacturing company at Nallampalayam. He befriended the minor girl and fell in love. On June 25, the youth abducted the girl and married her. When the girl’s parents learned that their daughter was living with the minor boy in a village near Udumalpet, they lodged a complaint with the Saravanampatti police, who registered an FIR. The minors were traced and brought to the city.

2,500 cops to be deployed to enforce lockdown | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: As many as 1,000 police personnel are to be deployed in the city to enforce a 14-day total lockdown from Monday. While only takeaway service will be allowed in hotels till 9pm, bakeries, grocery shops, vegetable markets could function till noon. Police will conduct vehicle checks at 12 check posts and 40 temporary picketings. Four deputy commissioners of police (DCs), 13 assistant commissioners of police (ACPs), inspectors of police and sub-inspectors of police also will be on patrol. Police have identified 75 important junctions, including Range Gowder Street, Gandhipuram, Lakshmi Mills junction and railway stations, and fixed public addressing (PA) systems there. Pre-recorded voices will be aired to create awareness about the Covid-19 in these junctions.

Liquor sales go up ahead of dry days | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: Liquor sales at the outlets run by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac) shot up on Thursday after the state government announced its decision to close them for two days on Saturday and Sunday. Tasmac officials expect at least 25% more sales till they down the shutters on Friday night. There was a long queue outside the elite Tasmac shop on Bharatiyar Road near Lakshmi Mills on the day. A salesman at the shop said both the number of customers and the bottles they purchase had increased over the past couple of days. “It is mainly because of the government’s announcement to close the shops on Saturday (May 1 - International Worker’s Day) and Sunday (vote counting day). Also rumours about the complete lockdown in the city has been doing rounds on social media. Hence, there is a rise in liquor sales,” he said.
