Sri Lanka: End of forced cremations for coronavirus victims restores dignity for Muslim burials


Responding to the Sri Lankan authorities’ decision to end the practice of forced cremations for victims of COVID-19, Yamini Mishra, Amnesty International’s South Asia Director, said:
“This is a long overdue but welcome move by the Sri Lankan authorities. Forced cremations, which should never have been carried out in the first place, have denied the Muslim community the right to say goodbye to loved ones in accordance with their religious beliefs.
“The ending of this cruel practice, which has not been scientifically proven to prevent the spread of the virus, allows Sri Lanka’s Muslim minority a dignified burial in line with Islamic burial rites. ....

Responding to the Sri Lankan authorities’ decision to end the practice of forced cremations for victims of COVID-19, Yamini Mishra, Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific Director, said: 
“This is a long overdue but welcome move by the Sri Lankan authorities. Forced cremations, which should never have been carried out in the first place, have denied the Muslim community the right to say goodbye to loved ones in accordance with their religious beliefs. Why Imran Khan Skipped Taking Up Forced Cremation of Sri Lankan Muslims?


SRINAGAR: Visiting at a time when Sri Lanka is facing the music for cremating the Muslim victims of the Covid-19 pandemic, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan talked about Kashmir insisting that it is Pakistan’s only dispute with India. He said he did approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after he was elected as the Prime Minister.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has a rousing welcome during his Sri Lanka visit.

“Our [India-Pakistan] only dispute is Kashmir and it can only be resolved through dialogue,”
India Today quoted Khan telling the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Trade and Investment Conference, which he co-chaired with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa. “Immediately when I came into power, I approached our neighbour India and explained to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the way forward for the subcontinent is to resolve our differences through dialogue.” ....
