View Comments Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch gave Tyler Alexander a soft fist bump on the chest and smiled. The left-handed reliever starting Monday s game against the Milwaukee Brewers had just walked away from the on-deck circle and into the dugout. Nomar Mazara came off the bench to pinch-hit for him in the second inning, following Alexander s two-strikeout scoreless first inning. Playing at American Family Field, a National League ballpark, Hinch didn t want his pitcher to bat with two outs and the bases loaded against Corbin Burnes, one of the best pitchers in baseball. Unfortunately for Hinch, Mazara grounded out and the Tigers (22-32) squandered the early opportunity to disrupt Burnes. With Alexander out, the Tigers burned through six more relievers and lost in extra innings, 3-2, on a walk-off single from Luis Urias in the 10th inning against Jose Cisnero. ....
Luis Urías hit a drive that bounced over the wall and brought home Omar Narváez with the winning run in the 10th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Monday. The Brewers won their fifth straight and snapped the Tigers’ three-game winning streak. “He told me before the inning when we were going to the dugout,” Brewers shortstop Willy Adames said of Urías' game-winning hit. ....
share-square-358374 DETROIT While Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal continue their learning process as part of the Tigers rotation, another top young pitcher is taking a step toward Detroit’s rotation. Matt Manning is expected to report shortly to the alternate training site in Toledo. “The thought is to get him maybe an outing at the alt site before the Triple-A season starts,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. Manning is the Tigers’ top pitching prospect now that Mize and Skubal have graduated from prospect status. The 6-foot-6 right-hander ranks 21st on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list. The 23-year-old Manning was already expected to join the Mud Hens once their season begins May 4, having made 26 starts at Double-A Erie between 2018 and 2019. The Tigers kept him in Lakeland for Minor League Spring Training rather than send him to the alternate site with other Triple-A players so that he could ramp up his workload at a steady pace under better weather conditions ....
share-square-1657664 HOUSTON – The sight was a bit bizarre: Akil Baddoo, the surprise star of the Tigers’ first two weeks, walking back to the dugout after a called third strike he clearly saw differently. Stu Scheurwater, the home-plate umpire who called the third strike, was with him step for step, giving him an earful the entire way. “It was just one of those heat-of-the-moment things, just competing out there,” Baddoo said. “And what happened, happened.” The scene, in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s 8-2 win over the Astros, continued until Tigers manager A.J. Hinch stepped into the mix about halfway between the dugout and batter s box. For a brief moment, the sequence raised the question whether Hinch’s first ejection as Tigers manager could happen in the same ballpark where he received a standing ovation in his return to Houston. ....
