Five Missouri high school seniors were selected as members of the 57 th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars along with 161 students from across the country. The president recognized the outstanding students listed below for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. ....
A bill that indirectly provides state funding for private schools and home schools is viewed as a victory for parent choice by some and potential cover for bad actors by others. The bill, which on Wednesday was still waiting for Gov. Mike Parson s signature, creates what are called Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. It offers $50 million in tax credits for donations to not-for-profit organizations that provide scholarships for student tuition to private schools and religious schools or costs for home schools. The scholarships can be used by students in any town with a population over 30,000. In the Senate, Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, voted in favor. In the House vote, Republicans Chuck Basye, Rocheport; Cheri Reisch, Hallsville; and Sara Walsh, Ashland, voted in favor of the bill. State Rep. Martha Stevens, D-Columbia, voted against it. The Greenwood Laboratory School senior knew the prestigious honor was a long shot, even for the most accomplished high school seniors. Each year, up to 161 students as few as two from each state are selected. Wu, the daughter of Shuo-Sheng Wu and Xiaomin Qui, made the initial cut, listed as a candidate for the honor in early January along with nearly 100 Missouri seniors. She recently advanced, named one of 625 semifinalists in the U.S. including just 11 from Missouri. On the short list, she is the only one from the Springfield area. ....
