Cuttack city: Ignored, Netaji birthplace rejects politics


No politics please. That is what the people of the millennium Cuttack city seem to be telling political parties trying to claim the legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
The resentment is mounting following the BJP’s bid to steal the show during a programme at the Victoria Memorial where hostile vibes between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee were visible to all.

“Why the Prime Minister did not organise the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji here at Cuttack where he was born? I still remember the words of my father who used to tell us about little Subhas Chandra playing in our backyard, his days in the Ravenshaw Collegiate School. It would have been a fitting tribute to the martyr had his birth anniversary been organised here and not in Bengal,” said senior advocate of the Odisha High Court Suryakanta Sanganeria. ....

At a time when the 125th birth anniversary celebration of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose continues to have political overtones in neighbouring West Bengal, the occasion in his birthplace Cuttack was a stark contrast on Saturday. Janakinath Bhawan, the ancestral home where Netaji was born January 23, 1897, and which has been converted into a museum, received a steady flow of visitors despite COVID-19 restrictions. Subhas Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji, was one of the tallest leaders of the Indian independence movement. A staunch nationalist, Bose is known for his brilliant strategic moves to garner support for his cause not just in India but abroad as well. He formed the Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army to fight the Britishers who occupied India. On his 125th birth anniversary, we recall his life and contributions to India’s freedom struggle.
Early life and Education
Born on January 23, 1897 in Cuttack in the Bengal Province, he was ninth in a family of 14 children. His primary schooling was done at the Protestant European School in Cuttack, before being admitted to the Ravenshaw Collegiate School. After school, he joined the Presidency College, but later changed to the Scottish Church College at the University of Calcutta where he obtained his B.A de ....

Subhash Chandra Bose was a Nationalist leader who wanted complete and unconditional Independence for India. Born on 23rd January 1897, Bose was a highly educated man.
Baptist Mission s Protestant European School in Cuttack was the first institution he attended. He then went to Ravenshaw Collegiate School followed by Presidency College in Kolkata. Bose also attended Scottish Church College. He graduated from University of Calcutta in Philosophy. Bose also did B.A Mental and Moral Sciences Tripos from University of Cambridge.
After a fallout with top leaders in Congress, Netaji went to Germany back in 1941. Netaji used to give inspirational addresses on Free India Radio which he set up with the help of Germans. Although, Japanese victory in Southeast Asia meant that Bose had to gain their support to free India by defeating British forces back home. ....
