Legal review roils fish projects

A change in state policy has Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials reviewing numerous wild fish habitat projects, and alarming some of its private partners in the process.
Montana Trout Unlimited mobilized its members on Thursday after learning several of its collaborations with FWP were put on hold pending a new review by the state Fish and Wildlife Commission. All the projects involved removal of fish, whether by poisoning, electrofishing or netting. Such projects are typically designed to boost native fish species, such as gill-netting invasive lake trout in Swan Lake to protect westslope cutthroat and bull trout populations. ....

Commissioners wait to support Scenic River designation for Paint Creek
CHILLICOTHE- The Ross County Commissioners will wait for approval from the Ross County Engineer before supporting a Scenic River designation for Paint Creek.
Ross County Engineer Charlie Ortman said that he simply wishes to take time to work out a memo of understanding with the program to ensure that Ross County can maintain or replace bridges over the Scenic River Corridor.
We all want nice streams and rivers, said Ortman. We have quite an investment in infrastructure along those designated routes - millions and millions of dollars. We want to make sure that when it comes time to maintain or replace them we can get back in there and do just that without undue financial distress. ....

Ross County river may earn scenic river designation
CHILLICOTHE - Paint Creek, North Fork Paint Creek, Rattlesnake Creek and Rocky Fork Creek may soon earn a designation of scenic river, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The Paint Creek system, which reaches through Ross and Highland counties, would become only the 16th river to earn such a designation since the program began in 1968, said ODNR Scenic River Program Manager Bob Gable in a Ross County Commissioner s meeting on Monday.
A scenic river designation means that the waterway retains a majority of its natural characteristics although the water may show some signs of human activity. To qualify, the stream must have at least 25% of its riparian corridor in forest for a width of 300 feet. ....

Despite the challenges of working through a pandemic, river restoration practitioners continued to pursue dam removal projects in 2020 to revitalize local economies and communities and reconnect 624 upstream river miles for fish, wildlife and river health. Sixty-nine dams were removed in 2020 across 23 states, including: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
