An Edinburgh widower who was struggling with mental health issues due to the isolation of lockdown has walked 2,000 miles in a year after his doctor prescribed that he join the Ramblers.
Jim Snodgrass, 84, from South Queensferry, said he was expecting to receive medication for his anxiety.
But instead all he was given was the Ramblers phone number.
Dr Victor Jack said he recognised that Jim needed social connection not pills.
Jim, whose wife Sheila died six years ago, said he broke down during the first Covid lockdown in March 2020. ....

Twelve group alliance demands a right to regular school lessons outdoors and a new Scots recreation minister
A GUARANTEE that all school pupils in Scotland will have the right to benefit from the outdoors supported by a new government outdoor recreation champion has been demanded by a coaltion of a dozen recreation groups.
The appeal to MSPs has come as one study showed that around two in five young people in Scotland were concerned about their mental health and wellbeing during lockdown.
A manifesto by the Scottish Outdoor Recreation Alliance (SORA), states that every primary and secondary school pupil should have at least one week away at an outdoor centre, as well as taking regular classroom lessons outdoors. ....

Scottish transport bosses are looking at building more visitor friendly laybys on the A9 after fierce criticism of “pathetic” provision.
Veteran land campaigner Dave Morris said Scotland is “probably the worst country in Europe for visitor provision close to the road” as he called for change to the A9 dualling plans.
Mr Morris, who lives in Kinnesswood near Kinross, hit out at the size and scarcity of spaces laid out in final plans for dualling the main route between Perth and Inverness. ....

'My entire childhood was an outdoor education course': Adventurers Mark Beaumont and Mollie Hughes share vision to save residential outdoor education centres

MARK BEAUMONT
Thinking back to when he grew up on a farm near Blairgowrie, record breaking round the world cyclist and adventurer Mark Beaumont reckons he had something of a “wild man” existence during childhood.
Home schooled and “feral” until the age of 12, the former Dundee High School pupil knew how to hunt rabbits and make his own shoes out of rabbit skins.
Every morning he’d have to get up to help milk 60 goats and collect eggs from 200 hens.
While he knows now he probably took those childhood experiences for granted, he’s in no doubt that the physical and mental competences he gained from getting muddy in the great outdoors and learning how to work in teams were “utterly formative” in terms of the confidence and resilience he’s dug into later in life. ....
